Irresolutions

My contribution to Cafe Writing-January Project: Option #6

I’m supposed to be writing for nine minutes about resolutions. I like the word because it sounds strong and firm. It makes me think of the Declaration of Independence and the Resolute desks… which I only know about because I just saw National Treasure 2 over the winter break. A lot of bloggers were writing about resolutions, but I wasn’t going to because I don’t really do resolutions anymore. I guess at some point in my life I did make New Year’s resolutions, but then I wouldn’t keep them and then I would be disappointed in myself. So I’ve solved that by not making resolutions.

On New Year’s Day, I think about what I would like to work on for the year, but I don’t resolve to do it, like it’s a government document or something. Kind of like I drifted in and out of blogging. I would pop in after two months and say I’m going to start blogging again, but that would last a couple of weeks. Then I would get busy and miss a couple of weeks. Then I would feel ridiculous posting again and having to explain why I wasn’t posting. So I wouldn’t post for another two weeks, which would turn into six months. So this time, I didn’t promise I was going to be blogging regularly. I will while I am and then I won’t when I don’t. No guilt.

I’ve hidden the timer under this screen, so I have no idea how much time I have left. This is the problem when one types fast. I can probably write a lot in nine minutes. For example, right now I’m thinking I should resolve to wash my face every night before I go to bed, instead of sitting up blogging and then realizing I’m only going to get five hours of sleep and I’m too tired to go wash my face. So off I go to bed with mascara and all. Some of you are probably completely grossed out by that. In my defense, I will say

I know that one all too well, how time can slip away at a speeding rate when blogging and suddenly it’s much, much later than one intended it to be.

I read somewhere recently that if we were meant to set new year’s resolutions, new year should not have been placed right after a week that is usually full of indulgence and relaxation, it’s too much of a shock to the system to change in the course of one night. Better it is to shake things up every once in a while over the course of the year. :-)

    Have a good weekend.

Well done! And the link will be live tonight. I’m having a brutal week and am behind.

I’m horrible with keeping up with timed writing. I tend to be a perfectionist, so every little punctuation, capitalization, spelling, etc. has to be perfect. I need to try this prompt myself.

Anyway, welcome to Cafe Writing! I’m not sure if you’re one of the new authors/bloggers, but welcome anyway! We have a lot of new people joining in the fun! :D

I find the timing events a stretch for me right now….Like A-lotus, the punctuation, spelling, etc. gets in the way of speed for me. Congratulations on giving it a go!
